Banana Cream Pie at Red Eye Grill

I devoured a wonderful slice of Banana Cream Pie the other night at the midtown restaurant Red Eye Grill. This restaurant is one that I have passed hundreds of times since moving to New York 12 years ago.  I have always been intrigued, but never visited.  That all changed when my friend Doug insisted I must try their Banana Cream Pie.  Once I realized that he and I have similar BCP feelings and frustrations I knew I could trust his recommendation.  A dessert lover might think this pie, being such

My New Favorite NYC Cafe

I’m a sucker for great cafes full of pastries.  I’ve enjoyed a lovely walk through Central Park every morning to rehearsal for On Your Toes at New York City Center’s Encores! series, and everyday I pass Petrossian Cafe. Little did I know, the Petrossian brothers introduced Paris to caviar!  Yes, this pastry-filled place is a giant in the caviar business, importing it from Russia.  Fitting since the show

An Italian Birthday Dinner

One of my favorite evenings is going out for fine dining.  My husband surprised me the evening of my birthday by taking me to Il Gattopardo near MoMa.  This Italian eatery was chock-full of Italian folk, which was a good sign in my book.  We were seated in the back garden area with exposed brick, beautiful flowers, and dim lighting.  This romantic ambience added a fantastical touch to the

Pastry Haven

As you have read recently, my birthday was quite the dessert extravaganza, and these pastries are included.  My lovely friend showed up to rehearsal for On Your Toes in New York City Center’s Encores! with these delicious pastries from Silver Moon Bakery.  The above pastries are their famous chocolate brioche and apricot croissant.  There is nothing like a good pastry in the morning.  I’m a

Beth’s Birthday Cake!

I’m “up on my toes” and applauding Beth Bennett at Bebe Bakes for the outstanding cake she made me.  I’m a big fan of having a big ‘ole cake on my birthday and enjoying it with friends, so I ordered a tap dancing themed cake from Bebe Bakes.  Beth didn’t just make me a tap dancing cake, she went

Healthy Bakeries in New York City

One of our favorite websites, Well + Good NYC, did a feature on the top healthy bakeries in NYC.  This list definitely gears to those dessert lovers who are gluten-free or vegan, but that doesn’t mean they don’t taste great.  Newcomer, Jennifer’s Way, made the list (not surprisingly) as well as the gluten-free cupcakery Tu-Lu’s.  Both bakeries are located on the

Birthday Surprise!

Birthdays are great for so many reasons, and today was mine, full of unexpected and “sweet” ones.  I started rehearsal on my birthday for the fabulous New York City Center Encores! musical, On your Toes.  Not only did the musical director immediately play “Happy Birthday” with the entire cast

Harlem Tavern Ice Cream Pie

Harlem Tavern is not just a place for good beer! A pretty diverse and delicious dessert menu is also well worth the trip to Harlem. This peanut butter and banana ice cream cake was really different and really good! The crust was a chocolate cookie crumb, not to thin but thick enough to taste and hold the ice cream. The thick bottom layer was all banana ice cream, perfectly cooled to eating temperature. It had a slight banana flavor that perfectly complimented the rich peanut butter without tasting

An Unconventional Cheesecake

This ricotta cheesecake at Piccolo Cafe in midtown is a delight to the palate.  As you can see, it’s not your conventional cheesecake.  After a full day of tap dancing, my friend and I needed something sweet.  After we were recommended this slice, we decided to try it.  I was a bit confused as to what I was tasting at first, but then I had to forget it was “cheesecake.”  It reminded me of a cheese

Dessert + Science + Musical Theatre

What happens when dessert meets science?  Well, I recently found out at the World Science Festival  Gala, which kicks off the World Science Festival May 29-June 2.  I performed in musical numbers celebrating Dr. James Watson’s accomplishments (it was his 85th Birthday!) and honoring the culture and content of science.  Dr. James Watson was a co-discoverer of the structure of DNA.   Let me tell you, portraying the DNA nucleotide Adenine was so fun!  Following the performance was the
