Jenis Ice Cream in Columbus, Ohio

IMG_0109IMG_0108

Since the tour of Young Frankenstein started I couldn’t wait to be in Columbus, Ohio to go to Jenis Ice Cream! I finally made it and boy is it DELICOUS!  Jenis is all homemade in Ohio and has several locations only in the Columbus area.  They make all the ice cream at the Grandview location and distribute it to the other stores everyday.  They have signature flavors and seasonal flavors and they are all AMAZING.  First off, the employees are so generous, giving away as many samples as you want.  Some I tried were Gravel Road (salted caramel with roasted almonds), goat cheese with roasted cherries, dark chocolate, pumpkin, and reisling pear sorbet!!!  I had the hardest time deciding what to order because every flavor bursted in my mouth and tempted me to have it!!  They also have signature sundaes that are just as creative as their flavors and ice cream sandwiches made with macaroon cookies!!  I ended up getting Gravel Road on a cone.  It was PERFECT.  The sweet caramel hit the front of my tongue while the salt kicked in right at the end.  Then the roasted almonds added a fantastic crunch and “fall” taste from the roasting.  It was smooth, cold, creamy, and delicate.  I also had a bite of my girlfriend’s Pumpkin Ice Cream Sandwhich.  The macaroon was crunchy on the outside to withhold the ice cream, but blended perfectly with the soft 5-spice pumpkin bliss inside!  Toasted pumpkin seeds trimmed this ice cream sandwich adding more texture and delight!

This is just my first review from Jenis, I am going back tomorrow night after my show.  They close at 11pm so I am racing over with my cousin for an after the show treat!  Hey, it’s Halloween…I deserve it!  xoxoBlondie

Chick Fil-A

Today I went to a Chick-Fil-A in Canton, Ohio.  Chick-Fil-A has amazing chicken nuggets, sandwiches, waffle fries, AND ICE CREAM!  Well, they call it ICEDREAM… and a dream it was!  Icedream was so delicious that I thought it deserved an entry.  It was light, icy, but creamy, refreshing with a sweet vanilla flavor.  The best part about Icedream is the no guilt feeling after your indulgence!  It is light in calories and fat!  An easy fast food alternative for a dessert.  This ice cream is similar to McDonald’s in flavor, but the added “icy” texture to the creaminess beats out McD’s!  Chick-Fil-A also makes milkshakes from their Icedream which sounds too good to be true!  They even have my favorite milkshake flavor, cookies and cream!  Serving milkshakes topped with a mound of whipped cream and a cherry, you might mistake this fast food joint for a 1950s soda shop!  Finally, Chick-Fil-A had the most wonderful, friendly employees serving everything and everyone with a genuine smile.  I think if I was serving Icedreams all day, I would too.  xoxoBlondie

It’s apple season!  And what better way to celebrate than with an apple pie!  While dining at Bar Six, I finished my meal off with their “Special Dessert” for the evening:  Apple Cobbler with vanilla ice cream.  Now, I know what you’re thinking, “What’s so special about an apple cobbler?” Well, first of all, you can never go wrong with an apple cobbler and ice cream.  Second, this isn’t your normal idea of the dessert.  It was literally a mini apple pie.  Yes, with the traditional pie crust top and everything!  The only difference from a pie though was that there was no bottom crust, therefore putting it in the cobbler category.  WOW.  Seriously, the top was light and flaky and the apples were fresh and perfectly cooked.  It was served in a mini pie pan right out of the oven.  The ice cream had slightly melted on top, making it the perfect creaminess.  And by the way, they know the the right amount of ice cream to use as well.  I hate when there isn’t enough to finish off the dessert.  I never ran out with this one!  If you want a fabulous and traditional fall dessert, go check out Bar Six!  xoxoBrownie

A Cookie and a Cupcake in Cleveland, Ohio

securedownload-2

A Cookie and A Cupcake is located in Cleveland, Ohio.  I am currently in Cleveland performing with Young Frankenstein for two weeks.  Since I am from Canton, Ohio, I always enjoy being in Cleveland and performing at Playhouse Square!!  For a cast members birthday we were lucky enough to have AMAZING cupcakes from A Cookie and A Cupcake.  They have a variety of flavors such as:  Lemon, Red Velvet, Espresso, PB Lovers, Grasshopper, and German Chocolate, to name a few!  Ironically, I chose their “Signature” flavor last night!  With all the frosting and a small chocolate chip cookie on top, how could I not?  It was a hard decision because all the cupcakes looked beautiful and the flavors are very enticing!  Make sure to go to their website to see pics of their cupcakes!  The frosting was sugary and silky!  It had a whipped texture that made you lick your lips after each bite!  I loved the little cookie too, which added a nice crunch!  The chocolate cake was MAGNIFICENT!  Like a homemade Duncan Hines, it reminded me of making cupcakes when I was a little girl.  It had that old, familiar cupcake taste that we all know and love.  It also was probably the freshest, moistest cupcake I have ever had.  I could barely keep it together in its wrapper.  Then, as I got to the center, a wonderful surprise appeared!  A filling of vanilla pudding poured out, adding a succulent contrast to the chocolate cake!  I honestly wanted to go back for seconds and thirds because I was dying to try other flavors!  In resistance, only because my costume is a corset, I watched my cast mates try their flavors to see what glories were inside their treats.  I took a picture of the Red Velvet cupcake which was filled with cream cheese!  So, when in Cleveland definitely head over to the Tremont neighborhood and stop by A Cookie and A Cupcake!  I don’t know if I have ever been more proud of my hometown!  xoxoBlondie

Market Cafe

Ok, so I must admit I’m not a big fan of the midtown area of 8th and 9th Avenues in the 30′s, but I must say, my opinion was altered a bit when I recently had lunch at  Market Cafe on 39th and 9th.  What an adorable upscale diner!  The food was delicious, and after a friend recommended I try their cake, I was sold on this place.  I tried their Banana Cake and boy was it good!  First off, it was a huge slice!  Four of us shared it and there was still some leftover.  I love icing and lots of it, so I was a bit hesitant when they served the slice since there wasn’t even any icing on top!  There were layers of a whipped cream filling instead.  Being open-minded, I dug right in to it and WOW.  This wasn’t just cake, it was the ultimate banana bread!  It was moist enough to taste like a cake but dense enough for a banana bread feel.  The filling was just enough to compliment it.  It basically tasted like amazing banana bread with whipped cream…which isn’t too bad!  I do have to say, I don’t consider this a cake, at least in the traditional sense, but man was it some banana-rama goodness!  I spotted a big piece of their chocolate cake as well, and I will be trying that next time!  So, New Yorkers, if you’re like me and stray away from this area, do make sure you stop by Market Cafe for a meal and dessert.  It will change your mind!  xoxo Brownie

Nancies Fancies

100_0937

Happy Opening Night to the cast of Young Frankenstein! To celebrate we had one of the coolest cakes I have ever seen!  Nancy’s Fancies Cakes is a bakery in Providence that specializes in designer cakes and favor cookies!  This cake was MONSTERIFIC!!  Everyone in the cast was amazed by the detail and size!  The head alone was twice the size of mine!  It was two different flavors.  The head was all vanilla cake with a thin layer of chocolate ganache.  The shoulder was chocolate with a thick layer of cherry frosting!  I have to say the shoulder was much better than the head.  The vanilla cake was actually very good, moist and spongy.  But, it needed a thicker layer of chocolate and smaller cake layers.  The result was a big piece of cake topped with really good fondant.  It really needed to be divided into layers with frosting in between and then fondant.  BUT!  The chocolate cake was FANTASTIC!  It was rich, moist and the cherry frosting complimented it perfectly!  I loved the fondant, really sugary and chewy!  For a cake of this magnitude you never know if it’s going to be good, but Nancy’s Fancies made a good one!  I think the whole cast agreed because people we getting to-go cartons to take this Monster home!  xoxoBlondie

Meeting Street Cafe in Providence, RI

IMG_0051IMG_0053IMG_0054

The Meeting Street Cafe is located at Brown University right off Thayer Street.  I noticed it on my walk through the college because of a large sign that said “Famous Homemade Cookies!”  I made a mental note to come back and see what these cookies were all about.  And so I did!  I got a Monster Cookie (appropriate for being in Young Frankenstein), a Chocolate Chip, and a Peanut Butter.  Now, I must say that these cookies were HUGE, about half a foot in diameter!  Each one was bigger than my face!  The Monster was my favorite!  EVERYTHING was in this cookie!  Oats, chocolate, walnuts, toffee…I mean I really can’t tell you all the ingredients.  It was so soft and chewy with globs of chocolate barely melted within the nuts and oats.  I loved every bite.  It was a cookie of my dreams!
The Chocolate Chip unfortunately was not as good.  It was really crunchy, if not a little stale, and almost hollow inside.  When I broke a piece off, it crumbled everywhere and was hard to bite into.  I will say there was plenty of chocolate which was nice, but I like a softer cookie than this.
The PB was AMAZING!  Really crunchy on the outside with a soft peanut butter center!  The best part were all the sugar crystals sprinkled and baked on top!  I loved that they fell into the lines of the cookie and found their way into each bite!  I kept coming back for more with this cookie!  Under each crunchy groove, I knew that a chewy center would be waiting for me.  It was delicious and would be great dunked in milk!  So when in Providence, check out the Meeting Street Cafe for their Famous Homemade Cookies!  xoxoBlondie
