Reader of the Week…McKellen Rattray!
Congrats to this week’s featured reader, McKellen Rattray! She’s always pondering her next sweet treat. While she holds all of her favorites near and dear to her heart, she’s eager to explore new shops and flavors whenever possible. Currently, she’s a social media intern at a startup in NYC (www.vimbly.com/nyc) and on the side she makes, devours, photographs, and talks about food and desserts (yes, they are separate categories). We agree that they’re seperate categories too McKellen! Thanks for being one of our amazing readers! Here’s some Q7A’s from our new dessert loving friend.
1. What is your favorite dessert and why?
Tiramisu. The kind that you scoop onto your plate (not that cakey kind), this isn’t too sweet, and has A LOT of espresso (and Kahlua). This is the kind I found at Edgar’s Cafe on the Upper West Side nearly nine years ago and the one my boyfriend’s mother taught me a few years back and have been making ever since. I have finished an entire large pyrex dish of it with my boyfriend in one sitting and am torn between being horrified and proud of this feat.
2. What is your favorite dessert of your hometown?
My hometown is NYC, so this is a bit tricky. One of the places that has stood the test of time for me is ChikaLicious. Everything I have eaten there (always paired with the iced tea in the fancy glass) is divine. But, if I were to tap into my true New Yorker, I would have to declare the matcha and oatmeal donut from Doughnut Plant to be my favorite dessert.
3. If you met a magical dessert Genie what three wishes would you ask him to grant?
-That every pastry shop make SOMETHING with matcha
-That macarons never go out of style
-That desserts in restaurants were like a tasting menu so I could just try everything they have
4. What is your favorite dessert in NYC?
I’m going to use this as an excuse to talk about even more dessert favs of mine in the city :) Anyone who comes to visit me is taken to Lady M for a slice of cake. Always. I’m pretty sure there no exceptions to this. My two FAVORITES–I mean it–are the pumpkin cheesecake in the fall (it being seasonal makes it even more special) and the strawberry shortcake. Close in second is the matcha and pain Mille Crepe.
5. If you were a dessert what would you be?
I’d be salted semi-dark chocolate with a hint of cayenne pepper. Sweet, energizing (but not too sweet) and quirky with a bit of a feisty kick.
