Finally making it to Voo Doo Doughnuts!
The smell of freshly baked dough overwhelmed me as I walked up to Voo Doo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon. I have been to Portland a couple times now, but have never had the time to fit in a trip to Voo Doo. What’s that they say, “Good things come to those who wait?” Yes, they sure do! The line to get into Voo Doo wraps around the corner at all times of day, but it’s a good thing because it allows you time to look over the ridiculous menu before getting up to order. However, when you see all the fresh donuts in person, all colorful covered in everything from tang to cocoa puffs, you have a mini panic attack. Am I getting the best ones? I have to order that! Oh wait, what about that one? By the time they hand you your pink box filled with warm yeasty dough you are salivating and in need of a little (or a lot) of SUGAR! All five of my doughnuts were AH-MAZING! It’s hard to pick a favorite, but you know I did! It’s called the Memphis Mafia and consisted of fried dough stuffed with bananas, covered in a cinnamon sugar glaze, topped with peanut butter, chocolate chips. and chopped peanuts! It was like an apple fritter, but with Elvis style. My second favorite was the Dirty Cowboy. It was a chocolate cake doughnut topped with vanilla icing and covered in coconut flakes with a huge dollop of creamy peanut butter in the center. To round out my top three is the Voo Doo Doughnut. It was a yeast dough covered in chocolate icing filled with raspberry jam. The play on a voo doo doll was that there was a heart drawn on the top of the doughnut with a pretzel stick in it. When you bite into this doughnut/doll a nice helping of raspberry jam, signifying the blood, pours out of the doughnut. Kinda creepy, but exceptionally good! Every doughnut at Voo Doo is special with a twist or theme attached. They are right off the tray from the kitchen so you are guaranteed a fresh treat at anytime of day. All of the doughnuts I had truly blew me away. And as you leave and walk around the streets of downtown Portland, proudly displaying your pink box, everyone stops you either asking for directions, recommendations, and even extra doughnuts you’ll give away! After years of waiting for Voo Doo, I wasn’t sharing!
