Quarkballen at Neuschwanstein Castle!
While visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany I happened upon a magical fairytale treat, a Quarkballen. Yes, this is just fried dough, but there’s a secret ingredient in this dough that makes it special. Quark is a type of cheese and the fattest version is commonly used in desserts all over Bavaria. The taste of it reminded me of cream cheese. The quark here was added to the basic dough and then freshly scooped, fried, and dumped into a bowl of powered sugar before being served pipping hot in a paper cone. Yes, it’s as good as it sounds. Actually it’s pretty much a dream come true. The cheese in the dough separates this “donut” from any other I have ever had. It not only melted in my mouth but had this intense creaminess to it. I didn’t need a handsome prince or a crown of jewels while visiting this castle, I only needed Quarkballen!
