Northern Spy Food Co.

My friend, The Aussie Who Ate The Big Apple, recommended this hip spot when I needed an East Village restaurant recommendation.  Northern Spy Food (actually the name of a NY apple), was not only green and creative with their decor, their farm to table food was outstanding.  I’ve never had better pork buns!  I tried three desserts, two of which were the pastry chef’s recommendations:  Oatmeal Raisin Bread Pudding with stout toffee sauce and orange buttermilk sorbet, Honey Mousse with parsnip cake and poached pear, and Apple Brown Butter Crumble with toasted almonds and cinnamon ice cream.  To my surprise, my favorite was the Honey Mousse.  The honey mouse was a semifreddo with a poached pear layer right in the middle, all on top of parsnip cake.  YUM.  The honey flavor in the creamy mousse was divine along with the fresh cake.  Not only was this dessert enjoyable, the creativity of the ingredients made it unique.  I’ve never heard of parsnips in a cake, but it completely worked.  I’m a huge fan of cake and ice cream together.  To me, this fulfilled that love in an entirely new way.  I will soon be back for another dose of Northern Spy!
