Lovin Oven Cakery

I was given a tour the other day of local bakeries in the northern suburbs of Chicago.  My good friend Doug who lives in the area had three delicious bakeries that he said were a “must try” while I was visiting Chicago. First on the list was the Lovin Oven Cakery.  Located in the cute town of Libertyville, this adorable cakery bakes up anything your heart desires!  I think my eyes literally popped out of my head when I walked in.  No matter what dessert I was craving they had it and it looked good!  Not knowing what to order, I asked for assistance from one of the very-lucky-to-work-there employees.  They suggested trying a certain pastry called the “Snuggle,” which is one of their most popular treats.  So that it wouldn’t be alone on our plate, I choose a rather snowy looking snowball.  Doug and I took a seat and with fork and knife in hand dug in!  The “Snuggle” is a pastry dough filled with cinnamon, pecans and coconut crunch and then covered in a maple glaze.  Sounds pretty amazing right?  Well, it was.  The dough tore apart like a warm cinnamon roll with bits of pecans falling onto the plate.  It was chewy on the inside with the sweet maple glaze that melted in your mouth.  The crunch of coconut added to the sweetness but didn’t take away from the main ingredients of cinnamon and maple.  It was so good - it was gone in minutes!

My snowball consisted of yellow cake filled with buttercream and covered in coconut flakes.  It was so beautiful to look at I almost didn’t want to take a bite - just like I hate ruining new fallen snow on the ground.  Sweetness abound, it was definitely hard to have more than a couple bites even for my sweet tooth.  But I didn’t mind because it meant that I could take the other half home for a late night snowball indulgence!  They serve both chocolate and yellow cake snowballs at Lovin Oven.  I was happy with my moist and flavorful yellow cake and I bet the chocolate is equally delicious!

This cakery is not to be missed.  I easily could go back many times and try something new each visit.  Friendly employees, warm atmosphere and scrumptuous sweets at Lovin Oven!
