Beretta in The Mission, San Francisco

My first stop for dessert in San Francisco was meant to be just dinner, but who can have dinner without a little something sweet?!  Well, after a long cross country flight, I was ready to eat, and luckily, my friend from SF knew where to go.  Beretta is a fun italian hangout that’s open late in The Mission area of San Francisco. First off, the food was incredible, with tasty side dishes made to share.  Being with a group of people, we were able to order multiple desserts.  Our delightful server, Quisha, recommended their Panna Gelato and told me to thank her after we eat it.  I knew this was a good sign.  The other two we ordered were their Rhubarb-Almond Crumb Cake with vanilla gelato and Blood Orange Tiramisu with rum-mascarpone. Pretty awesome descriptions right?!   Their Panna Gelato with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt was OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD.  It’s really just panna cotta gelato with olive oil and sea salt on top.  So simple yet so effective. Honestly, that sweet, salty, and cold combination was incredible.  I felt like it was a science project gone right.  I recommend this dish if you are in SF for even a day.  I would specifically go to Beretta for this dish alone.  Right up there with the gelato was the Rhubarb-Almond Cake.  This thick and buttery cake was drenched in rhubarb with a compote of it on the bottom.  The cake was like a big sponge soaking up all the sweetness.  The soft and cool vanilla gelato on top was a great accompaniment.  I just loved the tart rhubarb, not commonly seen on dessert menus.  Next, Beretta has done a unique take on the classic tiramisu by adding blood orange.  I go weak for anything cake-like and orange.  I think the citrus flavor with butter and sugar is delightful.  This tiramisu was just that.  Without prevalent coffee,  the spotlight was all on the blood orange.  Light, fluffy, and refreshing, this slice of fruitiness was lovely.  Last, we ended up ordering another cool treat:  Bonet Chocolate  Gelato with amaretti and caramel.  Um, yeah that would be crumbled Amaretti cookies in chocolate gelato.  Amaretti is actually the italian word for macaroons which means “little bitter things.”  The combination of cookie and chocolate was a perfect finish.  Beretta is a gem, and I highly recommend a visit to enjoy their food and dessert which exceed most.  Thank you, Quisha, for your recommendations.
