Granny’s Old Fashioned Doughnuts
I love donuts. Yup. That’s pretty much all I could mutter after tasting Granny’s Doughnuts. What’s great about visiting relatives is that you can go and try a bunch of local goodies. On the last morning of my Thanksgiving visit to NC, my stop was Granny’s. This place is such a small business in Aberdeen, NC (they don’t even have a website I can link to!), and these were seriously the BEST good ‘ole American donuts I’ve ever had. I tried their chocolate-iced yeast donut, the blueberry cake donut, and their banana nut muffin. First of all, they were incredibly fresh since they make them every morning. When they run out, they are gone for the rest of the day. The dough of the chocolate was so soft and chewy and the icing was the perfect thin layer of sugar. Fried dough and sugar….yes please! I just love how the icing get’s just a bit crusty on top, but when you bite in, the creamy layer is underneath. The blueberry cake was perfect. I’m a huge fan of cake donuts. Add something unique besides the standard plain ones and I’m game. This one had a thin crust of glaze and when I bit in, it was soft and and thick at the same time. The blueberry flavor was delicious, making me thinking of the classic blueberry muffin…but better as a donut! The banana nut muffin was classic. It was simple and to the point with great flavor and not too dry. A lot of times muffins like this one can be dry and boring, and I usually just eat the top. I ate this entire muffin AND scraped off the crumbs on the wrap! I think I’m going to dream about Granny’s for a while and long for one of their perfect donuts in my future NYC mornings. If you’re in Aberdeen, NC, you MUST stop by Granny’s and enjoy her delightful donuts!
