Cafe Lalo…C’est bon!
I cannot believe we have never posted about Cafe Lalo. I mean, I’m rather embarrassed since it’s such a lovely dessert spot that’s open LATE. When I say late, I mean 2 am some nights and 4 am others! It might actually be the latest sit-down dessert place in NYC. I’ve known about this place for as long as I’ve been coming to NYC when I was a kid. It could be due to the fact that it’s famous for it’s appearance as the set for a scene in “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Well, last night my friend was craving something sweet, so I recommended this French-themed coffee shop. The ambience makes you feel like you’re in a Parisian café, with exposed brick, large, wooden open shudders, and sparkling lights. No wonder Tom and Meg had a date planned here! There was a live musician and a surprise birthday all going on, creating a lively atmosphere of celebration! There are so many desserts to choose from, even I was overwhelmed. I concluded that I will just have to come back for more, therefore we decided on their German Chocolate Cake, Cherry Latice and Apple Walnut Pies with their FAMOUS Frozen Yogurt a la mode.
The German Chocolate Cake was delicious and a perfect size! It was so moist and gooey, and the thick and creamy coconut-pecan caramel icing was plentiful. Usually a larger layer cake, this German Chocolate was smaller and had one layer of a chocolate mousse-like filling. This filling just added to the moisture in the cake, and the icing complimented all the chocolate. It was garnished with a piece of chocolate and a dollop of what seemed to be a whipped, light creamy cocoa. Très bien!
The Cherry Latice Tart was delightful. I love that they give you the option of it being served warm or not. Well, I definitely got mine warm with their FAMOUS Frozen Yogurt. The cherries were wonderfully tart along with the “pinkberry-like” tang of their scrumptious froyo. The tastes together were a perfect match. The latice crust was thick and buttery. This cherry pie deserves what my grandpa used to say about my mom’s, “Mmmm good cherry pie Betsy!” Mmmm good cherry pie Lalo!
If you love thick and crunchy crumble on top of your apple pie like me, this is a slice for you! Large chunks of crumble covers a generous layer of sliced apples. I always test out the crust and see if it’s good enough to eat alone, and this one passed! It easily crumbled in my mouth and had the same consistency as the crumble on top. Served warm with froyo a la mode, the tang of the yogurt meshed lovely with the pie’s spices. Merci beaucoup Lalo!!!
