Since seeing Doug’s Pecan Pie Sundae from Buttermilk Channel in the dessert issue of Time Out Magazine, I have been salivating!  When I found
out that they serve a $25 Monday dinner special that included a mini version of this sundae, I hopped on the F train to Brooklyn!  Buttermilk Channel is absolutely phenomenal from start to finish.  Warm popovers drizzled with clover honey and sea salt start the evening and gooey pecan pie end it.  Our server and the manager had fantastic recommendations and bent over backwards to make our meal magical!  Doug’s Pecan Pie Sundae literally tasted like an extremely chunky butter pecan milkshake.  First, you enjoy a dollop of fresh whipped cream that is light and  enticing.  Then you embark upon layers of pecan pie mixed with vanilla Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream.  The slice of pecan pie was extremely gooey and full of large pecans.  The ice cream added creaminess to the rich flavor from the molasses and bourbon in the pie filling.  Doug Crowell, owner of Buttermilk Channel, makes something similar every Thanksgiving and decided it must be on his menu.  How genius to take the traditional slice of pie, add ice cream, and make a sundae!  I just might have to create my own this turkey day!
Next up was the chocolate and caramel tart, covered in salted peanuts.   This tart, if in a blind taste test, would be compared to a Snickers bar.  A “gourmet version” of a Snickers bar!   It had a chocolate cookie crust that was thick and crunchy.  The chocolate filling was rich with a bitter bite while the caramel layer added contrasting sweetness.  There were a lot of salted peanuts covering the slice so you could enjoy them with every bite.  This dessert definitely had the salty/sweet thing going on.  The two desserts actually complimented each other very well.  I loved sharing bites between them.  A creamy, cool, and crunchy sundae then a rich, salty, and sweet tart.  Mmm…what a wonderful evening!
