Bomboloni: Top Donuts in the Country

And the donut obsession begins!  When I recently posted the “Best Donuts in America” article, I wasn’t kidding when I said to look out for a lot of donut postings.  I don’t know what it is about donuts that makes me so excited.  Maybe that they’re a “breakfast food” that you can eat anytime of the day?  They remind me of when I would get a dozen WARM Krispy Kremes for my 7:30 am Calculus class in High School (just a little sugar to jump start my brain for that god awful early time to be adding and subtracting).  The point is, they are loved all over the world, whether it be the American donut, the French Beignet, the Indian vada, the Persian bamiyeh, the South African koeksuster and vetkoek, the German Berliner, the Greek loukoumas, or the Italian bomboloni.  Well, I just enjoyed my very first bomboloni at Bomboloni!  In the article I posted, Bomboloni was voted one of the top donuts places in the United States and it’s just a short walk from me!  I had to get over there to taste these amazing fried dough creations.  First of all, they have so many different kinds of bomboloni and they’re all beautiful.  I read that their Crème Brulée was amazing so I chose one of those, along with the Peanut Butter Cup (if I see PB and chocolate I will ALWAYS get it), and the Fresh Raspberry (right out of the oven!).

The Crème Brulée was out of control!  The center was filled with thick cream that just seeped in to the dough. The fried dough was soft and fluffy, yet crisp on the top from torched sugar just like the dessert!  The crackly with the creme is always delicious, but add fried dough to it and it’s superb!  I actually think I prefer this French dessert in it’s donut form!

The Fresh Raspberry was reFRESHing with it’s delightful fruity flavor.  The gooey center was a nice compliment to the buttery donut, and the lightly dusted powdered sugar was the perfect finish.  Again, the fried dough was so soft and light.  I definitely prefer to eat my “jelly toast” in this form anyday!

When I saw a donut, or excuse me, bomboloni, topped with a peanut butter cup, I was sold.  As some of you may know, I’m a Peanut Butter and Chocolate lover, and I was giddy at the idea of this combo in a donut! The donut was mainly PB which was no problem at all;-).  Just look at the amount of peanut butter cream in the photo at the top of the page!!!  It was almost like a peanut butter pudding inside!  The PB cup on top was the perfect afterthought.  These donuts are incredible and I can’t wait to go there again, but this time sit and enjoy my Italian bomboloni with a hot cappuccino and pretend I’m in Italy for an hour!
