The Waverly Inn has been one of the most exclusive places to dine in NYC and has always been somewhere I’ve wanted to go.  I called for a reservation the other night and was able to get a table!  I had heard many tales that they never answer their phone, only “members” can get in, and it’s frequented by many celebs and socialites.  Well, thankfully that must have cooled down a bit since my husband and I recently had a very secluded and romantic dinner there with no problem.  The ambience was a dream! The place was stunning with warm red colors and a stable-like decor.  We dined in the outdoor garden area with lots of greenery and candlelight.  Our dinner was lovely (we tried their famous $65 Truffle Mac and Cheese), and we ended with two delectable desserts:  Pistachio cake, raspberry coulis, and vanilla gelato and chocolate cake, hazelnut brittle and sauce, and earl grey gelato (their gelatos are provided by il laboratorio del gelato).

The pistachio cake was delicious and like a small muffin.  It was a brown butter cake with a pistachio flavor and stuffed with raspberries.  The top was sugar glazed to create a sweet crispness.  The raspberry coulis was a nice addition to flavor and, of course, vanilla gelato is always a good accompaniment.  The chocolate cake was flour-less and oh so thick and fudge-like.  The richness of the chocolate and the earl grey gelato was a fight of flavors in my mouth.  Our server recommended this combination and boy was he right on track.  Both flavors were trying to immerse themselves on my taste buds.  The strong chocolate won in the beginning, but surprisingly, the earl grey was the final burst of flavor.  I actually closed my eyes to enjoy what I was tasting.  The hazelnut brittle pieces were the perfect final touch to the texture and flavor of the dessert.  My husband and I had these plates finished in record time.  Relaxing and fulfilling, we will be coming to this quaint spot for another memorable visit.
