Pizzeria Mozza is a new and trendy Mario Batali restaurant in Hollywood. After finishing a fantastic dinner of gourmet pizzas, we couldn’t wait to see the dessert menu. To be honest, we were just expecting some gelato and sorbet selections, therefore we were pleasantly surprised by the unique creations. We chose the Strawberry Gelato Pie, the Caramel Copetta, and the Butterscotch Budino.
The Strawberry Gelato pie was served with slivered and spiced almonds and saba. It was in the traditional pie slice form, like an ice cream cake. This cold slice was definitely all about the gelato, yet there was a scrumptious thin crust underneath. The gelato was soft and creamy with a ripe strawberry flavor. It was so nice to be able to easily cut in for a bite. Topped with homemade unsweetened cream, drizzled strawberry sauce, and a side of balsamic strawberries, this fruity dessert was so refreshing. The almonds on top provided the perfect crunch to every bite.
The Caramel Copetta was served with a marshmallow sauce and salted Spanish Peanuts. The was the ULTIMATE sweet and salty dessert. Scoops of caramel gelato sat on a homemade waffle cone cookie and were covered (copetta) with thick and gooey marshmallow sauce. The salt from the Spanish Peanuts made the flavors burst in your mouth. You couldn’t keep your spoon away from the bowl! Spanish are one of the most popular types of peanuts: smaller and rounder with a redish skin. They are also the most flavorful in the peanut family. So it makes sense why they were chosen to top this dessert. Digging in to this rich and decadent gelato while scooping up marshmallow sauce and roasted peanuts was heaven for any dessert lover! Although it wasn’t called a sundae, it very much was one. This was definately the favorite dessert at the table. It would win over anyone, salt and sweet lovers alike.
Budino is traditionally a chocolate pudding, but at Pizzeria Mozza they serve Butterscotch Budino! Presented in a small glass, this pudding was filled to the top and finished with butterscotch sauce and a dollop of whipped cream! We love butterscotch flavor: so rich, creamy, and of course buttery! This pudding was perfect by not being too overwhelming or dense. Served on the side were two Maldon sea salt and rosemary pine nut cookies. Again, the Pastry Chef, Dahlia Narvaez, is playing on the ever popular sweet and salty taste here. It was amazing how the rosemary and pine nut, two flavors you would never think of dessert-wise, went so well with the pudding. The cookies were crispy, flakey, and light. Whether you dipped them into the the pudding or had bites in between, it had your mouth watering.
We both agreed that all the desserts at Pizzeria Mozza complimented the dinner menu fantastically. After having a variety of gourmet pizzas you definately need an upscale, yet simple dessert menu to follow. All these desserts had that going for them! The pie, sundae, and pudding were unique to the restaurant and got two very big thumbs up from Blondie and Brownie! xoxo Blondie and Brownie
