I went to a fabulous restaurant in London the other night, one of the best seafood restaurants in the city!  The dessert menu was out of control and luckily everyone at the table ordered something different, so we passed them around to try!  WARNING….the photos above are NOT of the actual desserts at J. Sheekey’s.  They have a strict policy of no photography in the restaurant, so I was unable to capture the beauty of our actual desserts.  These are courtesy of Yahoo! images.  I was unfamiliar with a lot of them such as; spotted dick, pavlova, bakewell, and scandanavian ice berries.  Who ever said the Brits don’t know good dessert?!  Goodbye Triffle, hello Pavlova!
Let’s start with spotted dick.  The name alone would get anyone to order it!  It’s sort of like bread pudding.  A spongy cake is “spotted” with raisins while hints of cinnamon are laced though.  A delicate vanilla bean custard sauce was poured over it at the table.  The sauce had real vanilla beans that you could see adding to the “spot” affect of the dessert.  Thank God for the custard sauce!  Alone the spotted dick would have been bland and boring.  The warm custard turned this dick into a “out of the oven” cinnamon roll!  Still not my favorite dessert in the world, but very good for a name like spotted dick!
Pavlova!  Oh Pavlova!  This was fantastic…like a European version of the American classic, Strawberry Shortcake.  It was light, crisp, and definitely hit my sweet spot!  Pavlova is a meringue-based dessert named after the Russian ballet dancer Ánna Pávlova.  Meringue is made from egg whites so it’s whipped, airy, and sort of crispy; probably why it was named after a ballet dancer!  Inside this meringue was ice cream and then topped with strawberries and sauce.  Oh was it wonderful!  I recommend this to anyone if they ever see it on a menu!
Scandinavian Iced Berries in a hot white chocolate sauce was next!!!  Can life get any better than this????  Fresh blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are served on a plate and then hot white chocolate is poured all over, like a dessert soup.  The best part is that you would think the white chocolate would be heavy and overwhelm the berries, but NO!  It actually is very thin and light, adding just enough chocolate flavor to compliment the beautiful berries.  Yummy!
I order the bakewell, cherry bakewell to be exact.  Bakewell is known as a jam pastry with an egg and ground almond enriched filling.  Mine was sort of a cake/pie consistency.  A pie outer edge and cake- like inside stuffed with warm cherries.  It was served with ripple ice cream on the side.  Bakewell is delicious!  I LOVED having a bite of the tart with a little ice cream, it reminded me of cobbler in a way.  It was circular in shape and about 4″ high, dusted with powerded sugar!  The cakey inside was moist and sort of syrupy from the soaked cherries!  Mmmmm!
I really wish I could have taken photos of the desserts at J. Sheekey so that you could experience the beauty, color, and design!  They were just gorgeous!  You will just have to visit London and make sure to stop in for some dessert of your own to see them for yourself.  xoxoBlondie
