Georgetown Cupcake in Washington, DC

Walking through the streets of Georgetown this afternoon I thought to myself, ” Amanda, you have been in DC for a couple days and not eaten any desserts!?!” Luckily, after an inspirational yoga class, what do I see across the street but a cupcakery!!! I figured I deserved a treat after working so hard in class! Georgetown Cupcake is a beautiful bakery, very clean and pristine. With a pink decor and silver tiers covered in perfectly frosted cupcakes, one might think Elle Woods would live here! Waiting in line I eyed down the competition, but two cupcakes caught my eye. The coconut, because it looked like a giant snowball, and the chocolate with vanilla icing because it was topped with chocolate sprinkles!!! I LOVE sprinkles and have a hard time not ordering something covered in them. So, wrapped in a pretty pink box, I took my cupcakes over to a table to start my enjoyment! The chocolate cupcake was just ok. I have become very picky about my chocolate cake and this one didn’t quite do it for me. Although it was fudgy, it lacked a rich chocolate flavor and was a little dry. However, the icing on this cake was FANTASTIC. Smooth and creamy, this icing was not just vanilla based. You can definitely taste cream cheese in it as well. The chocolate sprinkles on top added that little crunch texture which was delightful. I ended up taking the bottom portion of cake off and just eating the top of the cupcake. In the end, all I wanted was the icing with this one.
On to the coconut! Just by unwrapping this cupcake, I knew I was IN FOR A TREAT! It had weight to it and height! It was thick and dense, but moist! The coconut on top was coming over the wrapper, like gruyere cheese over a french onion soup bowl! I couldn’t wait to take my first bite. IT WAS HEAVEN! A great cupcake, in my opinion, should be the best bites of a piece of cake in a smaller, rounder form. It should be covered in frosting and so moist that it seems under baked. That was what this was like. Then, a wonderful surprise, there were coconut flakes actually baked INTO the cake! AMAZING! I am convinced that this was the secret to the intense flavor and density to the cake. It was so fresh and just in the center a little under baked!!! The frosting was generously spread on top and also covered with coconut. It looked so perfect, like a little snowball on a wintery day. Except this snowball was not meant to be played with, but to be EATEN!
