I did something today that I never do. Sometimes you have to take a risk because you have a feeling a dessert might be good. In this case it was at a diner on 9th Ave called West Way Diner. I have been to this diner numerous times and never ordered dessert, particularly because diners seem to keep desserts in their cases forever until the last piece is served. Somehow that never screams fresh or flavorful to me! We have all seen the layered mouse cakes, the cream pies, or the huge cheesecakes that, more or less, disappoint every time. Just a huge cake that is stale, full of calories, and frankly not worth one bite! OK! Stop the presses! I have found an AMAZING diner dessert! A banana cream pie! First of all, I LOVE BCP! What is not to love? Bananas, pudding, a graham cracker crust, and loads of whipped cream! Magnificent! It is not easy finding good BCP. Usually the piece is too small, or too sweet, or the ratio of pudding to cream is off. So when the table next to me was served a piece of banana cream pie, my eyes were pulled in their direction. It looked good, really good. And as I finished my chicken wrap, I thought…”Should I order this pie? Maybe it is as good as it looks?” This piece was exceptionally light, with many thick slices of banana on the bottom mixed into a sweet vanilla pudding. The crust was crunchy, buttery, and held all the ingredients perfectly. Then came the meringue-like whipped cream topping that looked like a snowcapped mountain on top of the pudding. It was so light with just enough sweetness and flavor, complimenting the perfect pie! Sprinkled peanuts graced the outside edge, adding a delightful crunch to the velvety pudding and whipped cream. I couldn’t have had a more surprising, scrumptious dessert this evening. So if you’re in the theater district make your way to West Way and order a piece of Banana Cream Pie! xoxo Blondie
