I can’t believe this bakery/restaurant has been on 9th ave for almost 3 years?!?!  How did I miss it?  On the bakery menu are some creative desserts all made with soy or tofu and ingredients that definitely spike interest.  The soymilk soft ice cream is one of them.  The ice cream is dairy-freevegan, all-naturalkosher, and low in fat and calories.  The flavor of the day was dark chocolate and matcha green tea.  I also had the HOMEMADE matcha green tea mochi as a topping!  This soymilk ice cream was so light, but FULL of flavor.  I was amazed that I didn’t taste a soy flavor in the ice cream.  All I could taste was creamy and refreshing ice cream!   The mochi was dark green in color and really chewy.  I loved how big the squares were too!  It was the perfect summer treat!macaroon
I love macaroons so I had to try the Black Sesame-Anko flavor.  Anko is a red bean paste in East Asian cuisine.  I wasn’t sure that this flavor combination would hit a sweet note with my tastebuds, but I gave it a try.  WOW!  This macaroon was everything it should be and more!  The top and bottom shells were so crispy on the outside and SUPER chewy on the inside.  Every time I bit into the cookie, the top cracked perfectly but then melted into the Anko center.  I also like the size of this macaroon.  It was about a 2, maybe 2.5″ diameter and an inch high.  It is a wonderful cookie to grab if you are in the need for something sweet.  I want to try the coconut flavor next!  New York Magazine voted the chocolate souffle cupcake here as one of the best, however I do not agree.  I had the mini version and was disappointed.  Their cupcakes are not frosted!!!  NO FROSTING???  How can you not frost your cupcakes?  I did have a mini cupcake that had a green tea mochi inside, which was very delicious!  The mochi melts and makes a fudge like center, very unique!  In general the highlight at Kyotofu, in my opinion, is the Soymilk Ice Cream.  It certainly gives all the Red Mango and Pinkberry’s a run for their money!!!  xoxo Blondie
