A comment on NY magazine’s article on the “15 best cupcakes”

There is an article out about the Top 15 NYC cupcakes in New York Magazine.  Nancy Olson from Gramercy Tavern was lucky enough to have all these cupcakes delivered to her to sample and then rate.  I have some differences in her findings that I would like to say.
First of all, her number 9 pick…Cupcake Cafe.  The fact that this cupcake even made it on a list of best NYC cupcakes is unbelievable.  Cupcake Cafe is that typical bakery in NYC where you walk by and are overcome by the decor of the cupcake, so you think to yourself, “These must be good!”  You spend the $3, sit down, take your first bite, and SPIT IT OUT!  YUCK! What a gross cupcake!  So bad that I cannot even finish it!!!  The cake is dry, stale maybe, and the frosting tastes like grease.  The fact that they beat out Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Butterlane (the Banana cupcake is best), and Billy’s Bakery blows my tastebuds!
Second, Baked NYC distributes their DELICIOUS treats to Royale Cafe and Pastry Shop in the West Village.  So, if you can’t make the trip out to Brooklyn stop by the Manhattan outpost.  The Salted Caramel is wonderful.!  Check out the review on our site.
Thirdly, I was shocked that Alice’s Tea Cup or Amy’s Bread were not on the list?   Both have amazing Chocolate Cupcakes.  Or Crumbs even, because of the variety or flavors??
For Chickalicious to be the overall winner???  I don’t think I agree.  Yes, I enjoyed my S’mores Cupcake and give points for creativity and presentation, but I wouldn’t hike down to the East Village to have more of them.  I’m not craving, dreaming about the day my teeth sink into the cake and lick the frosting off my lips.  Do you see what I’m saying?  That’s what a cupcake should do.  Make you go out of your way on a sunny afternoon because you need a sugar fix.  Or, lift your spirits on a rainy day.  Or best yet, stop you in your tracks at first bite.   New Yorkers are picky about their cupcakes and everyone is quick to tell you their favorites.  No way will every New Yorker agree on just one.  I find that I go to certain bakeries for different reasons.  Do I want a something small and on the go? Tribeca Treats or Royale Cafe would be the place.  Do I want a load of thick, sugary frosting and then throw away the cake? Magnolia.  Maybe a cupcake with candy toppings or a lot of variety? Definitely Crumbs.  Red Velvet? Buttercup Bakeshop, Two Little Red Hens, or Spaha Cafe.  Chocolate? Alice’s Tea Cup.  Vanilla vanilla? Sugar Sweet Sunshine.  Creative presentation and frosting? Sweet Revenge.  See what I am saying?    xoxo Blondie
