Today I traveled, by way of my new “Blonde” Vespa, down to Tribeca Treats. Located on Reade street, this small sweet shop has been on my list of places to try for months. I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot. Surrounding the counter are cool candles for birthday cakes, cards, books, and gift ideas. No doubt this is a one stop shop for someone going to a birthday party! Since I had my husband with my to share in this days indulgence, we ordered a cupcake, ice cream sandwich, and two cookies! Prices are very reasonable ($2 per cupcake) and the portions are perfect for an afternoon treat. I even had the pleasure to meet the very “sweet” owner, Rachel, who filled me in on what I was tasting…
The Black and White cookie is probably the most famous cookie in NYC. So it is only fitting that for March, it is their “cookie of the month.” Tribeca Treats has a cookie of the month club, where you can have a box of cookies sent to you every month. Black and white cookies are fun to eat because you get two cookies in one! This mini version had a light and spongy cookie with perfectly hardened frosting! Sometimes the vanilla frosting in B&W cookies has lemon flavoring, but not here! I am not a lemon girl so I was happy! It may sound silly, but eating a black and white cookie on a lovely afternoon in NYC makes you feel like a New Yorker.
The cookies and cream cupcake is chocolate cake topped with a vanilla buttercream. The buttercream is then blended with homemade chocolate cookies for the “cookies and cream” flavor. They are served chilled because the majority of costumers take them to go, but you can also have them room temperature if you dine in. The frosting was the highlight in this cupcake. I was reminded of dunking Oreos in milk every time I took a bite! On another note…Rachel explained to me that the chocolate frosting on their chocolate cupcakes is made with sour cream instead of buttercream. She said that sour cream enhances the rich flavor in chocolate more than buttercream. I often feel that chocolate buttercream lacks a rich chocolate taste so I would recommend trying a chocolate frosted cupcake as well to see what you think!
An Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich combines two of my favorite desserts. Tribeca Treats uses Ronnybrook Farms and 5 Boroughs ice cream in between their homemade cookies to create their delectable treat. I chose the chocolate chip sandwich with vanilla ice cream rolled in chocolate sprinkles. I almost hesitated ordering one because I was afraid the cookies would be frozen and hard to eat, but I was wrong! At the first bite my teeth sunk right into the chewy, soft cookie…it wasn’t frozen at all!! The ice cream was equally soft, creamy, and cool. The sprinkled outer edges added a sugary, sweet crunch. With other flavors like Graham Cracker Cookies with Mango ice cream, I’ll be back to try more sandwiches!
