While brunching down on Cornelia street, I remembered that I was very close to a bakery I found one day this summer. I had made a mental note to come back to this bakery so I was so thrilled to see they were open on New Years Day! Could there be a better way to ring in the New Year? I came to find out, after meeting and talking with the owner, that Sweet Revenge is not called a bakery because they also have a full bar. Opened in July, Sweet Revenge has been getting a lot of good press and hits by cupcake lovers in NYC.
There were several different flavors of cupcakes: Sweet Revenge (Peanut Butter cake with PB buttercream), Mocha, Eggnog, Vanilla, and Red Velvet. All of them looked amazing and extremely tempting. Despite my addiction to Peanut Butter, I chose the seasonal Eggnog and my favorite Red Velvet.
The Eggnog cupcake was topped with a cinnamon buttercream that was truly the icing on the cake. It was sweet, thick, with just enough cinnamon to excite buttercream lovers across the world. The actual eggnog cake did not taste “eggnoggy” enough for me but more of a cinnamon, nutmeg, spice cake flavor. The cake itself was dense but unfortunately a little dry. I give this cupcake huge seasonal points. It was my favorite out of the two.
The Red Velvet cake was topped with cream cheese buttercream and a drizzle of raspberry sauce. I like the raspberry addition, something different and unique. The cake itself was a little dry again, but the density was perfect. I thought that maybe the cake would have a raspberry taste or filling as well, but if it did I couldn’t taste it.
So in general Sweet Revenge is a great choice. I would love to go back to try more flavors and this time sit at the bar and enjoy a drink.
