Who would have guessed that up in Harlem on St. Nicholas is an adorable bakery serving some wonderful cakes and cupcakes. This corner shop has a cute, warm atmosphere and has been open for two years. In 2007, the New York Times even featured Make My Cake’s Red Velvet Cake. So, after a delcious brunch at Society Cafe, I walked a couple blocks north to Harlem’s best bakery. Since I can never pass up a Red Velvet Cake, I ordered the cupcake version topped with pecans and the black and white cupcake as well. The shop has a lot of seating so my husband and I dived right in to our selections. The black and white cupcake was topped just like the famous “black and white cookie”, half chocolate half vanilla icing. The cake was very moist, rich, with a rich chocolate taste. The outer edges of the cake were harder with a crispy edge, which added a nice texture with each bite. The vanilla icing was very sugary instead of buttery. I could actually see the sugar crystals. I loved having both chocolate and vanilla frosting on the chocolate cake! The red velvet cupcake had great “case appeal” (meaning it looked amazing in the glass case) because of the pecan topping. I don’t normally see a cupcake with pecans. It is usually on a cake. The cake itself was light, yet dense, and very fresh. I tasted a hint of lemon in the cake as well. I asked the employee if lemon or lemon zest was in the cake, but she did not think so. However, I stand by my taste buds and say there was a lemon taste. The frosting was ok. I would have liked more cream cheese, but the salty pecans added a great crunch. If you like cupcakes with more cake than icing, this is your place. The cupcakes are muffin size and are $4 dollars each… a little pricey in my opinion. Still, when in Harlem and in need of something sweet, Make My Cake is a great stop!
